First Class 20th June

20th Jun 2025
Here are some of the things that First Class have been doing this week.

English
The children listened to the story of 'the Teddy Bears Picnic' by Gill Guile. They really enjoyed the beautiful illustrations in this book. We read the book in class but here is a link to an online version of the story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8ebBrV__f8
The children then made a list in their copybooks of all the things they would need to plan their own teddy bear picnic. They also had lots of fun designing invitations for it and discussing who could be the guest of honour. They came across lots of new vocabulary this week including 'crane', 'chipmunk' and 'honour'. They also had a go at writing some lovely summer poems.
The children had lots of opportunities for reading for enjoyment this week. They especially enjoyed reading big books with a friend.

Maths
We explored the topic of 'Money' this week. The children investigated ways of making different amounts up to 50 cent. We talked about how to do this efficiently ie using the least number of coins possible and starting off with the biggest coin first. The children enjoyed putting their knowledge to the test by playing lots of games. Check out this link to have a go at the games at home https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/toy-shop-money/eur

Irish
We continued with our topic of Siopadóireacht this week. The children completed a colouring task on the story 'An Sionnach agus an Chircín Rua''.

Geography
First Class explored images of the seaside this week. The children talked about them using the 5 senses as the focus point for discussion. They completed a lovely seaside picture using oil pastels.

Music
The children have been practicing the song 'the Teddy Bears' Picnic'. It's so catchy we have been singing it all week!
