First Class 9th May

9th May 2025

From a 'Pirate' theme day to our Teddy Bears' Picnic it has been such a busy week in First Class. Here are some of the things the children have been doing.

English
We visited the school library this week where the children enjoyed hearing the story of 'Pirates in Pyjamas'. The children made a list of verbs, nouns and adjectives associated with pirates and they had a lot of fun designing a wanted poster for their own pirate. Our Phonics focus this week was the 'ou' sound.

Maths
The children have been looking at regrouping in addition. We started off by exploring this concept using lots of practical equipment before moving on to solving questions by writing them down. This is such an important concept in mathematics. Going forward it would be extremely beneficial for you to practice this with your child. Can you work out these questions and bring them in next week to earn table points? 45+39=

We also explored directions using a compass to help design our pirate tresure maps.

Irish
The children revisited the topics of Eadaí and Bia this week. They learned two new poems, coloured in pictures by listening to instructions in Irish and they played some games.

Religious Education
The children learned that May is an important month for Catholics to honor and celebrate Mary the mother of Jesus. We have set up a May altar in our prayer space and the children have designed some stained glass windows with her image for display. We have been learning the song 'Mary our Mother'.
